Seat belt anchors are welded to the floor for quick, easy installation of front seat belts should you desire them. There are also locators for rear seat-belt hardware. Seat belts are optional at extra cost. Vacuum-powered windshield wipers that operate in tandem...overlap to clear the center area for greater visibility. Two-speed electric windshield wipers are available at a slight extra cost.
Comet's trunk has been increased by 1.3 cubic feet to almost 30 cubic feet, more than twice the luggage capacity some compacts offer. The '62 Mercury Comet features extra amounts of body insulation for lower sound level and greater passenger comfort.
Choose from two six cylinder engines - the standard Comet "6" at 144 cubic inches and 85 horsepower, or the optional Comet 170 "6" at 170 cubic inches and 101 horsepower. Both engines operate on regular fuel, delivering high economy with spirited performance.

3-speed manual transmission is standard on all models. Merc-O-Matic has a fully automatic single-stage torque converter with an automatic planetary gear system. Merc-O-Matic is optional on all models.
