James Kovacs says:
I have a very unusual and quite rare now, 1970 Mercury Montego MX Station
wagon with 63,710 original miles. I actually purchased this car from a
friend of mine in Independence, Missouri who specializes in the
intermediate Ford and Mercury products, like Fairlanes, Torinos, Cyclones,
and Montegos. He had been tracking this car for over two years, and
originally saw it for sale on eBay, and eventually tracked it down to his
home state of Missouri. He knew that I always wanted a Station Wagon in
my collection, and this wagon is so clean, and has so many options, and
not to mention a rare model year Montego that you just don't see
anymore... I just couldn't pass this one up. I am not sure what number I
am in its ownership, but I suspect the original owner may have been an
executive for Ford Motor Company. This wagon bares a decal, right above
the data plate, that states: Executive Motor Pool MFG. DIV.
This wagon still drives and
performs like a 5-year old car, instead of a 35-year old car, and all of
the options still work, except for the clock. The little 302 2bbl (rated
at 220hp in 1970) motivates this wagon as if it were a 351 Cleveland, and
with a 3.00 traction lock rear end, pulls pretty fast! The previous owner
had the a/c completely re-done and converted over to R134, installed an
aluminized dual exhaust system with performance mufflers, and completely
re-built the front suspension. Unfortunately, 2 owners previously,
removed the factory luggage rack. Fortunately, it is still complete with
mounting hardware and gaskets, and just needs to be re-installed again...
hopefully, paw and I will be able to do this next Spring. About the only
other thing this wagon will need is another set of 14" white wall tires,
as the present tires are weather cracked and dry-rotted from sitting.
Ironically, the original double pin-striped, Firestone bias-ply tire still
rests in the right rear spare compartment, and looks as though it was only
used one time!
Next
year's car show and cruise-in season should prove to be pretty interesting
when I show up in this big, green Montego wagon! I know I haven't seen
one of these Montegos in northeast Ohio in over 25 years, so it should be
a real head-turner. Plus, it is really cool owning a FoMoCo that was
built right here in my hometown of Lorain, Ohio. |
