1958 EnFo Consul Mk 2
Ford Motor Company, Ltd.
Dagenham, England
Introduced in Great Britain in January 1956, the Ford
Consul Mk 2 was an immediate sales success. With its transatlantic styling,
roomy 6-seat interior, rigid unibody construction, and high-revving,
oversquare 4-cylinder engine, the Consul was highly praised by the British
motoring press as an all around “best buy” and a capable all-around family
car with “a handsome, modern appearance.”
Ford Motor Company imported the Consul to the United
States during the 1950’s and sold them through selected Ford dealers. It
was marketed to the American motoring public as “a light, economical second
car in more affluent households” or as a “practical car for moderate-income
U.S. families.” The Consul met with modest sales success as part of Ford’s
import line-up.
By the late 1950’s, however, Americans were anxiously
awaiting “homegrown” compact cars promised by the Big Three. The 1960
introduction of the Corvair, Falcon, and Valiant marked the beginning of the
end for the English Ford Line in the United States.
