The Bobcat was Mercury's
all-new sub-compact economy car for 1975, based on the popular Ford Pinto.
The grille was distinctively styled with plenty of chrome, and the Mercury
name spelled out in individual letters above it. Narrow, horizontal
taillights on the Hatchback, just below the rear door, were equally
distinctive. Station Wagon taillights followed the style of the Pinto
Wagon.
1975 Bobcats were powered
by the 140-cubic inch 4-cylinder engine that developed 83 horsepower, and
the 170-cubic inch, 97-horsepower Six was optional at extra cost. Although
it was clearly a Mercury for the economy-minded, the Bobcat offered a host
of luxury options: air conditioning ($416), Hatchback vinyl roof ($83),
Villager luggage rack ($71), sun roof ($210), cast aluminum wheels ($136),
power steering ($106), and a nifty Sports Accent Group for $269. Four
speed manual transmission was standard and SelectShift automatic
transmission was optional.
